What is All the Fuss about Omega 3 and Good Fats?

Weight Loss

Not too long ago there was propaganda flooding the world advising that fats shouldn’t be eaten period, not even in small portions. Back then there was no such thing as a “good fat”. It seems now the idea of eating good fats such as omega 3, 6 and 9 is not so bad after all, at least this is what recent research is suggesting.

Good fats come from a variety of natural foods such as salmon, nuts, cauliflower and figs to name a few. Many people find that they are omega deficient because they either have food allergies or can’t bare eating the above listed foods. If you are one of those people, then you are in luck because they now manufacture Omega supplements that will allow you to receive the same health benefits. I have taken the liberty to list top rated Omega supplements according to reviews and personal use:

1. Spectrum Essentials® Flax Oil

2. Solgar® omega 3

3. Coromega omega 3

Mypersonal favorite, for full health benefits I recommend Flora Udo’s Choice 3 6 9 Oil Blend. So you are probably wondering by now what are the health benefits of consuming omega oils ona daily basis? Studies show that a diet rich in omega 3 fatty acids may help lower triglycerides and increase HDL cholesterol, which is the good cholesterol.  There have also been several studies to suggest these fatty acids may reduce blood pressure and prevent the clogging of arteries. Ultimately, Omega oils increase cardiovascular functions and promote proper performance of the heart and brain.

The American Heart Association recommends that we consume fish at least twice a week to get the minimum omega benefits. Omega oils have also been linked to weight loss; many studies indicate candidates that ate omega supplements lost more weight than the group who didn’t consume omega oil. They also had fewer hunger pangs, so it appears that it may act as an appetite suppressant. Recent studies really show no negative impact of consuming concentrated amounts of Omega oils daily.

Like everything, I can only assume if eaten in large quantities, there could be negative repercussions. So don’t look at it as miracle oil but something to supplement your regular diet and should be used in moderation.

As vegetarian diets grow in popularity and concerns about increased amounts of mercury in fish oil, many people are turning to flax oil (which contains alpha-linolenic acids) Our bodies can convert ALA in both EPA and DHA, which ultimately gives the same benefits of omega 3 but there has been a higher link to flax oil and prostate cancer. Much more research is still needed but something to be aware of.

I use to take omega 3 fish supplements but the after taste was terrible, I too have switched to krill supplements and find that there is no after taste and from what I have read, the health benefits are 10 times greater than regular omega 3 supplements. The only down side that I have come across is the cost. I usually spend around $25.00 for 60 capsules compared to $9.00 for 90 omega 3 capsules. Regardless which one you consume, I believe both have great health benefits.
