Massive Crib Recall: Is Yours on the List?

Home

Announcement as of Thursday advises that over 2 million cribs are defective and have been recalled. In the mix 7 companies have major recalls including Simmons Juvenile Products, Million Dollar Baby, LaJobi, Jardine, Evenflo, Delta Enterprise, and Child Craft Industries.

The cribs all have a similar problem in common, the drop side of the crib’s malfunction, or fails to create a space in which an infant or toddler can fall, getting a wedge causing strangulation or suffocation. CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum has said such cribs are a “deadly hazard” after the agency documented 32 deaths since 2000 and recalled millions of the beds.

Among the baby cribs that are being recalled, there is a list of additional baby items that have also been recalled. Presently, there has been 24 deaths related to playpens causing asphyxiation and death from collapsing around the baby. There are multiple companies involved with the recall of playpens. Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards are the reasons the following companies have recalled their product: Cosco, Graco, Simplicity, Eddie Bauer, Disney, Kolcraft, Evenflo, etc. I am not a mother, but am an Aunt, and it is extremely shocking to me that there are so many companies included in the recalls for baby asphyxiation.

Not only are there playpens, but toys, bedding, bassinets and list continues on. It should be required for all companies to display warning labels in stores where they are selling these baby items, so all mothers including new mother can be informed about what they are purchasing. No one should be subjected to the harm that these products are causing these babies.

There has been extreme efforts to make cribs safer for babies and unfortunately, critical injury and death has still occurred. Out of the massive supply that gets placed on the shelves across the country, some cribs do not pass the safety test, but still slip by. It is a shame, but reality and babies are the ones that suffer. More and more crib manufacturers recall several products each year, and it seems that they should be spending more time and money on fixing the problems then producing more products.

CPSC is working hard to clean up the marketplace and make it required that all cribs be federally regulated by the end of the year which should definitely decrease the number of deaths and recalls.
