The hula hoop has been around for decades and was an extremely popular toy in the 60’s through the 80’s. The hula hoop was invented by Richard P. Knerr and Arthur K. Melin in 1958. Until recently, the hula hoop has always been viewed as a fun kid’s toy. Further research indicates that hula hooping can help achieve a great core and burn calories aiding in weight loss, thus creating the new hula hoop weight loss fad.
When you’re shopping and see grownups flocking to the toy isle to purchase a hula hoop, don’t assume it’s for their four year old. I’m a little more skeptical. Yes, I do agree the hula hoop can help burn calories but to say it’s a complete exercise regimen would be a little farfetched. One thing is for sure, it doesn’t hurt to purchase one and see if you achieve results yourself. Cost is minimal and so much less than other exercise equipment.
So how do you use a hula hoop to work out? According to research around the web most people just hula. Simple enough right? The idea is to try and sustain your rhythm for periods of time, such as 10 minutes, 20 minutes etc… you will definitely feel the burn in your midsection, oblique’s and back. Hula hooping will increase your heart rate over time and can help with cardio. Some people really find hula hooping to be enjoyable, so it is worth looking into…get the best of both worlds, have a little fun and get the health benefits while doing it. I can imagine me trying this exercise regimen…It would probably be a YouTube wonder and I would be the laughing stock of the internet.
The “Weighted hula hoop” has also recently been introduced to the fitness industry and is available at most sporting good stores. Therefore, if you decide to step up your game and want to intensify your workout, there is no better way than by adding a little weight. Also it is important to make sure you have the correct hoop for your body size. Ideally the hoop when resting on the ground should come up between your waist and chest. Believe it or not this will make a difference when trying to sustain the hula movement. Remember good anaerobic exercise means sustaining good movement for periods of time without stopping. Keeping your heart rate up is a big factor for weight loss.
If you are open to new workouts and feel you need variety, don’t be hesitant to try hula hooping. Also, if you personally hula to stay in shape, please use the comment field below and tell us your thoughts. How has the hula hoop benefited your exercise regimen?
