The BlackBerry Torch went on sale last Thursday and was supposed to be a big hit for RIM. It comes to find out since the launch AT&T and Research in Motion have only sold a measly 150,000 phones. Not even a fraction of what the iPhone sales did in a single weekend. The price was originally $199.00 with the signing of a two year contract, it has reportedly been said the price has been slashed in half. The future of the Torch is already looking grim and this couldn’t be any more apparent by the desperate attempt to slash the price to get the phones into circulation.
RIM advised before the launch, that the new Torch is there “best BlackBerry yet” and has proven to be their most capable smartphone. RIM and executives were really hyped about the launch of Torch weeks prior, believing it would be the game changer that would swing momentum back toward RIM, which is slowly dwindling in the shadow of the Apple Iphone and Google Android phones.
The new Torch is the only Blackberry to run the new BlackBerry OS 6, the Torch offers a full Web browser, as well as other features common on most of today’s smartphones like social networking integration, universal search and multiple home screens. It includes a 5 megapixel camera, built-in GPS, and video recording at up to 640×480 resolutions.
The majority of sales have been made by hardcore BlackBerry users; it’s sad to see another failure by RIM. The last supposable “iPhone killer” was the Storm and Storm 2 and it was a huge flop. What is your take on the new Torch?
