Newspaper, checks you name it, people and companies want to say goodbye to paper entirely. With the internet and online bill pay, this does not surprise me. Everything will one day be converted to digital, the question we all are pondering, is when? Printing is old fashion and the majority of people read the news on the internet these days. Also, the cost to print is very high for companies which would rather resort to everything being broadcasted through the web.
I was just conversing with my mother about this, due to the fact that my Stepfather is computer illiterate, which is utterly ridiculous but true. He started a new job and feels way behind the game. In the conversation, I mentioned to her that in the near future everything will be converted over the internet and that you will no longer be able to write checks. It is much faster for companies to process things electronically and even though, they may be able to process checks immediately, companies would like to bypass the physical printing process all together, which brings me to the New York Times.
The chairman has recently announced that they will cease the printing of physical newspapers. It has taken long enough, but I knew that it wouldn’t be too much longer. The New York Times, also known as the “Gray Lady” will be extinct in paper format. The publisher and chairman were in an agreement of the change and expect that the process will be done in the near future.
The company is hoping that the change will not affect employment loss. They are going to re-structure the New York Times, but hopefully in a positive way. With circulation continuing to fall, the company intends to reduce the amount of losses for the following quarters. Several newspaper companies will soon be following in the New York Times footsteps and before you know it, there will no longer be the use for printing presses at all.
