John Mayer quits Twitter leaving 3.7 million followers in the dark. Twitter has rapidly grown to a social media powerhouse transforming the way that people communicate, in such a way in which I feel that it will ultimately negatively impact how people converse. Twitter operates off of short post updates in which people can read and make short replies. John Mayer advised that he could do better things with his time then tweet on a site that is slowly dieing in his eyes.
According to OK! John Mayer was extremely frustrated with negative replies from fans and Twitter users. Unlike many other stars, John Mayer was an interactive Twitter user, often replying to fans and giving away tickets etc… I personally believe he can do what he wishes but think it was a little selfish to not give his dedicated fans a notice.
John Mayer has announced that he will continue to use Tumblr, where is has already gained 500,000 fans. He likes the functionality and simplicity of Tumblr. Who knows, maybe this was one of those paid gimmicks where Tumblr lured him over to attract more users. Regardless of what fans think or say, John thinks he made the right move.
***Ok, so I thought I would add a little to this article after watching a 2009 interview clip from CNN, that John Mayer did in reference to Twitter. In the interview he stated that he would never drop his Twitter account and called it a sign of defeat and a sign of weakness. He said in the interview “He would never delete his Twitter account” He also stated that he may go inactive and not post but would never delete it. It’s pretty hypocritical; surely he knew that he would get heat from the press and fans. Not that this is big news…I just thought it was interesting.***
