I have noticed a trend in automakers pushing hard to incorporate social media and high tech gadgets into the revolutionary automobiles. Demand is on the rise for internet access instantaneously. Not too long ago, buyers were trying to determine the vehicle to purchase based off of “manual or automatic transmission.” Soon it will be based around which vehicle has the latest Android Tablet or iPad Touch. It still amazes me how quickly technology is advancing.
At the latest Paris Motor Show, BMW displayed the concept of factory installed iPad docking stations within the vehicle and on the back of head rest. This will allow passengers to surf the web, play games etc… Some have already said that they don’t like the fact because they want the freedom to use their own proprietary systems. It has yet to be disclosed if this feature will come standard or be optional. My guess is that it would be optional.
BMW has already created a docking station for the ever so popular iPhone; it seems as if the automaker has taken a liking to Apple and their top quality products. As long as they incorporate safety features that prevent the driver from being able to surf the web while driving, I don’t see it being a problem. Technology is ever so advancing and we need to accept the change’s that are rapidly occurring. One thing is for sure, when other automakers hear that a competitor is incorporating such gadgets, you better believe we will start seeing other makers trying to top the next best thing.
What’s your take on installing such devices in automobiles? Do you think the safety concerns out weight the convenience factor for the average consumer?
